While the use of Vitamin D in bone health is now well established, what is considered a normal blood level varies greatly between allopathic medicine and natural medicine. In general, allopathic medicine believes a blood level around 30 is adequate; however, those of us in natural medicine prefer levels of around 70 for optimum health. Why would that be, you might wonder?
Vitamin D is first used by the kidneys to regulate calcium levels in the blood and cells which is critical for our survival. It is only when Vitamin D levels have satisfied this first need that the excess Vitamin D makes its way to the many cells of the body to help resolve various degenerative conditions. The more Vitamin D available to get to the cells, the greater the impact.
That said, the safety of Vitamin D is dependent on adequate Vitamin K2. As with all supplements, look for quality. Make sure you’re using Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), the naturally occurring form of Vitamin D. Also, it is important that the Vitamin K2 is in the MK-7 form. All K vitamins are similar in structure but MK-7 has what is called a long side chain. This enables this particular kind of Vitamin K to be almost completely absorbed by the body while at the same time remaining in the blood the longest. By staying in the blood longer, it gives it time to not only help the bones, but also the arteries, thereby lowering the risk of heart disease and decreasing serum cholesterol.

Optimum Vitamin D levels benefit bone health, hormone health, immune health, cardiovascular health, autoimmune disorders, depression and seasonal effective disorders and many, many more. With proper supplementation of Vitamin D3 and the proper ratio of Vitamin K2 (MK-7), we now have a simple, essentially side-effect-free way of helping so many conditions and disorders.
